President-elect for the Freetown Golf club, Solomon Samba has said that membership has increased from 304 members to 408, an increase of 34%; he made this statement during an annual general meeting on Thursday February 28.
He also stated that there was a concomitant increase in the use of the club’s facilities which enlivened the club.
The new Golf President also stated that there has been an improvement on the club’s infrastructure and the committee undertook extensive renovation, rehabilitation and construction of the club’s facilities which was divided broadly into the following categories.
Water Supply; the club at the moment is not connected to the Guma Valley National Grid. The Committee with the generous donation of members dug boreholes and installed water pumps and bailing machines in order to ensure a constant supply of water throughout the year to the clubhouse, toilets, bathrooms and the lawn in front of the clubhouse which they consider is a very high cost.
The Kitchen, the committee believes that in order to encourage members to use the Club’s facilities frequently, they must upgrade the kitchen.
The Bar area which is a main area of relaxation, particularly during the rainy season had to be rendered more comfortable. ‘We now have an impressive array of drinks at the Bar, ranging from simple drinks to very exotic varieties.
And we have also provided very comfortable bar stools and a new Television set which was donated by an anonymous member for the comfort and pleasure of our members.’
He also stated that two Squash courts were completely renovated and would like to express sincere thanks to the Union Trust Bank and Consumer Finance Company.
He also stated that they have done a facelift of the Tennis Court and installed additional and appropriate lights to enable members play even when it gets dark.
President Samba said that there has been a great improvement in the Golf course which has been regularly cleaned and manicured and new Tee boxes, bridges, bonkers, and browns were constructed.
He also stated that they have obtained court judgment against encroachers of their land and are in the process of evicting them and their illegal structures demolished.
He also said that he hopes that when this exercise is completed, members will support the club financially to enable the club build a fence to ward off all future encroachers.
President Samba also said that they were able to organized various Golf tournament which include Vice captain, Lady Captain, and two Johnnie Walker tournaments and the President’s tournament which includes a Tennis tournament, Squash under 16 and community golf players tournament.
He said that they were unable to hold their flagship event, the International Golf Open tournament which was postponed due to the General elections. It is hoped that it will be held this year.
