Sierra Leone: ”This is the Best Olympic Day Activities So Far”-Dr Coker

The President of the National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone, Dr. Patrick Coker has said this is the best Olympic Day Activities so far.
He made this statement when addressing over 500 sports personalities at the Sir Alfred Jones Memorial Hall at Government Technical Institute at ferry Junction.
He said that two things came out of this year’s Olympic day activities; the diversity of activities by the sporting disciplines and the presence of the Sport Veterans like Umaru Deen Sesay, Kama Dumbuya, Joseph Toby and a host of others were in attendance.
He went further to say that it is very important to talk about these sport Veterans as these are the people that have served this nation diligently; that is why in this occasion, they need to be recognized for their contribution to this nation.
The NOC President revealed that he was impressed with the wheelchair disabled playing Handball for the first time and also looking at other sporting disciplines like Judo for juniors, Taekwondo and Fencing with the modern technology was in display.
Dr Coker said that the only disappointment in the activities was the performance of the Quiz teams which was not good, as they do not have knowledge of the Olympic movement.
The other disappointment, he said, was the absence of the Ministry of Sports and sports council officials, even though they were invited but they still failed to turn up for the programme. “This should have been the right place that both parties should have come together for the good of sports in the country”, he said.
During the Quiz competition, St. Helena Secondary School earned Olympic learning materials after finishing top in the Olympic Education quiz contest conducted among five schools in the East End of Freetown, followed by Ahmadiayya Muslim Secondary School in second position and third place goes to Municipal Secondary School.
Sports personnel confirmed that they were satisfied with the arrangement of the activities; ”because we were able to present our sports as well as showcase our talents to the masses,” they emphasized.
The Olympic run started at PMB Junction and ends at Government Technical Institute at Ferry Junction.
The NOC President, Dr Coker read the Olympic Day activities message from the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Jacques Rogge.
The message reads;
Dear Participants,
Today, people around the World are celebrating Olympic Day.
This day is more than an annual commemoration of the birth of the Modern Olympic Movement.
It is an inclusive celebration that attracts participants regardless of age, gender or sporting ability.
It is a day which brings the Olympic values and the joy of sport to communities all over the world.
It is also a great opportunity to engage youths in sport.
