The leadership of the Sierra Leone People’s Party headed by the Chairman and leader of the party, Chief Sumano Kapen yesterday paid a visit to the National Commission for Democracy situated at 9th floor Youyi Building.
In his address, the chairman and leader of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party chief Sumano Kapen said that they were there to brief the commission on certain pertinent issues of the party, starting with the just-concluded party conference in Bo which was held in a fair, peaceful, credible and transparent manner. He added that this is the oldest political party that was founded on the 27th April 1951.
He went further to say that the National Commission for Democracy was the creation of the military junta which is the NPRC, and the first person that was accorded the head was Dr. Kadie Sesay who happens to be the running mate of the flag bearer of the 2012 presidential elections. He said that what happened in Bo is historic, as for the first time in the history of the party, a northerner is at the hem of affairs in the party.
He said that this will change the disposition of politics in the country as SLPP is always termed as a Mende Man party and APC as a Northern Party. As the two major tribes of the country is Themne and Mende and there is a serious divide.
He added that the SLPP has been transformed to a nationalist party, as the political perception of people has changed and said that he hoped that their sister party will emulate the same. The leader also said that he wants to allay the fears of people that the SLPP is an elite party as he is a bright example because he was a chief but resigned to serve his party. He therefore pledged their unflinching support to the commission.
In his statement the chairman of NCD Dr. Abubakarr Kargbo said that the commission is very delighted to host the newly elected national officers of the SLPP, a party that has made history even before the independence of this country. The commission takes cognisance of the newly elected national officials of the SLPP and prayed that they will work very hard to strengthen the structures of the party, so as to consolidate national unity and cohesion.
The chairman went further to say that without any gain saying political parties have a very crucial role to play in the body politic of Sierra Leone and this role will determine the positive development of the country, even in a globalise world in which the country is still characterized by underdevelopment and dependency. Political parties are indispensable in promoting democratic good governance so as to ensure service delivery to citizens of a country.
