Sierra Leone News: We are 7,075641 people – Census

eeeStatistics Sierra Leone yesterday at the Miatta Conference Center in Freetown officially released the provisional results of the 2015 Population and Housing Census with a population of 7,075,641 people.
Officially launching the report, President Koroma said the 2015 census report will help the government to understand the actual population of the country.
He said census questionairs looked into several issues regarding the living condition of the people.
He said the outcome of the census results will guide the government and development partners in streamlining the needs of the people.
The President applauded the staff of Statistics Sierra Leone and donors for their valuable contribution in making the census a success.
He concluded that the final result of the 2015 census will be officially announced in December 2016.
Statistician General, Mohamed King Koroma, while giving an overview of the conduct of the census, said out of the 7,075,641 3,473991 are male and 3,601,650 are female. Among the population 49.1% are men whilst 50.9% are women with 3.2% growth rate.
According to the statistics, Northern Sierra Leone has the highest number of people in the country with a population of 2,502,805 whilst Southern Province recorded 1,438,572 and Western Area with a population of 1,293,252 and Eastern Region have the lowest number of people in region with a population of 1,641,012. He said the entire census was over 90% success rate.
A statement of the Chairman of Statistics Council Sierra Leone which was read by Professor Abdulai Mansaray stated that the 2015 census is in fulfillment of the conduct of national census every ten years.
He said Le74.9 billion was spent on the conduct of the census of which Government of Sierra Leone provided Le52.5 billion whilst donors such as UNFPA, UNDP, Irish Aid and DFID provided 22.4 billion in logistics and expertise.
The Government of Sierra Leone provided 70% of the census budget.
Statements were made by donor partners who applauded the exercise.
