Sierra Leone Sports: Western Region captures fifth beach volleyball title

Western Region male and female volleyball teams displayed their qualities on the sand to clinch the 2017 Inter-Regional Beach Volleyball Championship staged at the Siaka Stevens Stadium beach volleyball court in Freetown on Sunday 29th January.
The host proved their dominancy in the sport with so much energy and superb team work on the sand to defend their titles. The victory gave the west their fifth Inter-Regional Beach Volleyball Championship titles.
Western Region women’s team (2) Zainab A. Kamara and Maria G Fofanah beat South’s team (1) Bernadette Fofanah and Zainab Conteh in straight sets of 25-15 and 25-14.
Western Region women’s team (1) Fatmata Binta Bah and Francess Lansana were awarded a set of 21-0 because the South’s team (2) was incomplete as one of the players was injured just before the match.
This gave the Western Region a three straight sets victory against the Southerners who settled for silver medal after finishing second place in the female category.
Eastern Region, Iyekaday Kairah and Lilian Ngauja won bronze in third position after defeating Zainab Dainkeh and Nansu Bundor of the Northern Region by two sets to one (22-22, 21-15, 12-15).
In the male category it was victory again for Western Region men’s team against the Northerners.
North team (1) Patrick Lombi and John S. Kamara were put under intense pressure by Western team (2) Mohamed Sillah and Mohamed Kamara.
Northern Region Patrick Lombi and John S. Kamara won the first set 21-17. The two lads surprised the rousing spectators with a well deserve come back to win 17-21 in the second set.
But with experience and stability, Lombi and John finished off the third set 15-11 to win the match 2-1.
Unlike the West team (2) that gave the Northern team (1) hard fought, North team (2) Saiba Njai and Bangalie Sannoh were no match for West’s team (1) Abubakarr Kamara and Ishmael Bangura.
Kamara and Bangura were quick to win all two sets 21-11, 21-10 against the Nrthern Region.
West team (1) Abubakarr I. Kamara and Ishmael Bangura made no mistake to take the lead against their opponent as they knew a win in the golden set will crowned them champions of the event. They set up a brilliant attacking force and superb defensive blocks to win the set 15-12.
Eastern Region male team Yusif Chebli and Mohamed Sannoh took the bronze medal after defeating Southern Region Israel Fayia and Mathew Amara in two straight sets 21-7, 21-18.
Head Coach of Western Region team, Ibrahim Totor Koroma, was awarded as best male coach of the championship said he was very delighted with the performance his players put up.
“We worked very hard on the court with intensive trainings to achieve this success. As a coach I am proud of all my players but the lads do me proud”.
“I am so much impressed with what they displayed in the court of play. And honestly they were focused, composed and well determine to face each and every opponent, “Coach Totor said.
Special trophies and certificates were awarded to deserving players and coaches for their outstanding performance towards the successful end of the championship.
Western area Abubakarr I. Kamara was awarded Most Valuable Player of the tournament while his teammate, Francis Sombo Lansana, was crowned female MVP.
