Dr. Hou Quanzhong has told Awoko that he has been working as a traditional Chinese Medical doctor for 30 years, specialising in diagnosis and treatment of internal diseases, clinical working, teaching and research experience.
Dr Hou said Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) for the people of Sierra Leone, may be strange, but said it has been very effective all over the world.
“Recently a Chinese pharmacologist from China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine Tu-Youyou won the Nobel Prize because of her discovery of Artemisinin. It makes Traditional Chinese Medicine became a hot topic once again around the world.”
Dr Hou averred that President Xi-Jinping said TCM is the key to the treasure-House of Chinese civilization. “I think it is true. TCM has a history of more than 5,000 years. It has a complete theory about the occurrence, development and treatment of diseases.”
He said it is very holistic and is mainly focused on the balance of “Yin and Yang”, as well as body and mind. Yin and Yang he said are the two concepts from ancient Chinese philosophy and they represent the two contradictions in everything.
The Chinese doctor said the TCM theory; Yin and Yang are used to explain physiological and pathological phenomena of the body. They are also the principles of diagnosing and treating diseases.
“According to TCM theory, the occurrence of diseases is the incoordination between Yin and Yang, and the treatment of diseases is the re-establishment of the equilibrium between them. Chinese medicine mainly consists of natural and herbal remedies, as well as body/mind techniques.”
Dr Hou said there are two common ways of TCM to cure diseases: drug therapy and non-drug therapy. “As for drug therapy, traditional medicines are used such as herbs, minerals, animals, etc. As for non-drug therapy, there are acupuncture and moxibustion, massage, cupping, nutritional balance, Qi-Gong, Tai Chi and Meditation etc.
“At present, in the Hospital, I used mainly non-drug therapy of TCM to treat patients such as acupuncture and moxibustion, massage, cupping etc. because there are no TCM drugs now in Sierra Leone. I hope that the TCM drugs will be introduced to Sierra Leone, to serve the patients.”
He said in the hospital he has two jobs – TCM clinic and pharmacy management. “In clinical work, I used my Chinese medicine technology and enthusiastic service to treat patients.”.
“During my free time in the hospital I have been gradually establishing TCM so that patients can start to experience the magic of TCM.”
He said as he works in the pharmacy, he is dispensing drugs through prescription and he said he is always sound and in good state of mind.
“Since I came to Sierra Leone, I have completed outpatient service of over 15000 person, pharmacy dispensing prescription over 14000 and has did so much work, that makes my body tired, but still in a very happy mood and in good shape of mind.”
Dr Hou said Sierra Leone is a beautiful country; the people are friendly and would like to use Chinese medicine technology to make great contributions to its health.
“I sincerely hope that the people of Sierra Leone through industrious work, will change the backward medical situation, and realize the idea to be rich and strong and be happy always.
Moxibustion is a form of heat therapy in which dried plant materials called “moxa” are burned on or very near the surface of the skin. The intention is to warm and invigorate the flow of Qi in the body and dispel certain pathogenic influences.
