The National Aids Secretariat (NAS) in collaboration with EHF Foundation and other partners have joined the world over to commemorate the Day of Africa Child in Kenema with the theme, “Accelerating protection, empowerment and equal opportunities for children in Sierra Leone by 2030”.
The joint commemoration took place at Segbwema, which started with a procession from the town centre to the community centre. Some of the activities undertaken include music and chair games, debates and quiz competitions, and skits designed to raise awareness on HIV/AIDS.
Eight schools in Segbwema took part in the event including, Holy Ghost Junior Secondary School, Wesley Junior SS, Jaluahun Junior SS, Ahmadiyya Junior SS, among others.
In his statement, Regional Coordinator NAS, east, Dr. Mohamed Baba Sesay, described the Day of the African Child as a day of reflection and called on all to continue praying God for the victims 40-years ago. He called on parents to continue providing the enabling environment for their children in order to be meaningful citizens in society.
One of the pupils, Patricia Karimu, from Holy Ghost Junior Secondary School said, “The day is not meant for jubilation but is a day to offer prayers for their brothers and sisters who were killed in Soweto in South Africa.”
