Sierra Leone Business: New Bank Governor named

Dr Patrick Saidu Conteh

Dr Patrick Saidu Conteh

It has pleased His Excellence President Koroma to appoint a new Bank Governor. He is Patrick Conteh the Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development. He was formerly the Deputy Managing Director of the government owned Sierra Leone Commercial Bank. Some alleged malpractices saw him and his boss the managing director spending some nights at the maximum security prisons and making the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Several months later they were cleared of the irregularities and promptly retired from the Bank with their full benefits. The Bank Governor then had swiftly moved in with an interim management team which took over and ran the then ailing bank until substantive appointments were made.
Dr Patrick Saidu Conteh becomes the 5th Central Bank Governor to be appointed under the Ernest Bai Koroma administration within a ten year period. In 2007 after the elections, the then Bank Governor Dr J.D. Rogers was removed to make way for Dr Samura Kamara. He was also subsequently replaced by Mr Sambadeen Sesay. He also was replaced by Mr Momodu Kargbo, who was also replaced by Dr Kaifala Marah who resigned recently to further his political ambitions.
Patrick Conteh also follows the trend of all appointees coming from the Finance Ministry.
He holds a BSc honors in Economics, and is a Fellow Chartered Certified Accountant. He also holds a Masters in Business Administration and a PhD in management with specialization in finance.
He is an alumnus of the Albert Acedemy, Fourah Bay College, Oxford Brokes University and Walden University.
