Sierra Leone News: Mother and baby in jail

31-year old Fatmata Kamara, a hair dresser, allegedly murdered her co-wife, Sama Bangura, on Sunday 19 June 2016. According to the police, Bangura (28) was 10 month pregnant when she was killed.
The accused, Kamara, who is also pregnant, was in jail throughout the preliminary investigation of the matter before Magistrate Binneh Kamara at the Siaka Stevens Street Magistrate Court in Freetown. The accused had her baby and is still on remand with the baby at the Correctional Centre.
On Thursday 13 July 2017, she appeared before Justice Komba Kamanda at the High Court for trial. Her defence counsel I.P. Mamie raised the issue of bail for the accused since she was with her baby. He said for her to be behind bars with her baby will result in the issue of stigma for the child.
Justice Kamanda suggested that the state put measures in place so that the child of an alleged murderer will not be kept in jail with the mother.
Meanwhile, the Court has not been able to proceed with the trial because the jurors have not been present. Mamie said if the jurors were not in Court by the next adjourned date, he will make a formal application for bail of the accused. The matter was adjourned to 20 July 2017.
