Former Member of Parliament for Constituency 97 and former Minister of Tourism, Victoria Saidu Kamara, told journalists that she wants to vie for the presidency under the All Peoples Congress. She said, “This is the time for women to take up the mantle of leadership.”
Kamara said she has served the APC diligently and she has capacitated herself strongly as she now holds a PhD in Sustainable Tourism Management. She said she is primed to take up the leadership after President Koroma.
“I have served this government and party all of my life. I was very instrumental in helping President Koroma win both elections. I won the parliamentary seat of Constituency 97 and was in Parliament for three years. During that period, I was representing Sierra Leone in the ECOWAS Parliament and rose up to be Deputy Speaker. I was then appointed by President Koroma to become Minister of Tourism in 2010 until the 2012 elections.”
Kamara said women have long been the manager of the home and many women are afraid to come out or because they do not see themselves as worthy candidates.
“I want to say that the women must come out now and support someone that will listen to their cries; someone who understands how they feel and who will take education and health very seriously. I believe that President Koroma has done a lot but we need fresh ideas and someone to take the country to higher heights; and that person is me.”
Hon. Victoria Saidu Kamara averred that she meets all the criteria set by the party and she is ready to throw her hat in the ring and she believes that she has a good chance of winning the race.
When asked if she is on good terms with the president and the Party hierarchy, Kamara said she has a very good relationship with them all, although she said she has not spoken with President Koroma for some time now, but believes that she is fine with them and will continue to support the Party.
She stressed that she is APC and if even she is not selected, nothing will make her leave the Party that has done so much for her. “I want to be the voice of the voiceless and I want actualize my dream by making Sierra Leone a better place. I am calling on the Party hierarchy to consider my passion to change the status quo and bring prosperity to our people.”
She said Sierra Leone should have had a female president long ago before Liberia but the time is right now for Sierra Leone to have a female leader.
She called on the Party stalwarts to remember that when they are choosing a presidential candidate it is not only for APC but for the entire country, so they must make sure that whoever is going to represent the APC must be up to the task to continue the developmental process that President Koroma will be leaving behind
