Sierra Leone Sports: Paralympic Games is a major International multi-sport event – Alexander Thullah

The scribe of the Sierra Leone Paralympics Committee, Alexander Thullah has said the Paralympics’ Games is a major international multi-sport event where Sierra Leone has compete in and it involving athletes with a range of physical disabilities, including impaired muscle power (e.g. paraplegia and quadriplegia, muscular dystrophy, Post-polio syndrome, spina bifida),
He said there are winter and summer Paralympics’ Games, which since the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul, South Korea, are held almost immediately following the respective Olympic Games.
All Paralympics’ Games are governed by the International Paralympics’ Committee (IPC).
He also revealed that the Paralympics first started in 1948 when Ludwig Guttmann organized a sports competition which involved World War 2 veterans that had spinal injuries.
Afterwards a similar event was organized in Toronto, Canada where different disability groups were added and the idea of merging together and taking part in athletic sports was a success. Thullah said as an committee we are trying to see how we can reach up to international standards for the betterment of the committee and over the past months will have been recognized internationally both in Africa and the world as a whole.
