Sierra Leone News: Traders vows to vote against APC if…

SLCTU President Foday Sahid KamaraThe membership of the Sierra Leone Concern Traders Union (SLCTU) on Friday 17 November 2017, vowed to vote against any aspirant carrying the APC symbol for Mayor of Freetown except Reverend Bankole Gibson.
They made this disclosure during the official declaration of Reverend Bankole Gibson for the Freetown Mayoral symbol of the APC at SLCTU headquarters along ECOWAS Street.
SLCTU Secretary General, Fuad J Mansaray, maintained they have resolved their intention to come up with an independent candidate to run for the seat of Freetown Mayor because of their experience with the previous Mayor who turned against traders after being elected into office.
“No matter what, we will remain loyal supporters of APC but we will not vote for the position of Mayor if the symbol is not given to Reverend Bankole Gibson,” he said.
According to the Chair of Garrison Street Traders, Saidu Gbla, they are people from the provincial towns: “Country men”, and have been subjected to marginalization in Freetown based on their background.
He expressed fear over the family name of Gibson, relating him to the current sitting Mayor Bode Gibson, who according to him failed to fulfill his promises to the traders who campaigned for him in 2012.
According to the Chairlady, Fatu Conteh, “In 2012, most of them were in support of Reverend Gibson for the symbol but were unlucky to secure it, which we believe should be awarded to him this time round as a member of SLCTU.”
She disclosed more than 90 percent of their membership belong to the APC for decades and are ready to vote in Samura Kamara as President but will think seriously on the issue of Mayor if the symbol is not given to the man they recognized as a colleague.
Mariatu Abdulai, Chairlady of Low Cost Market at the east end of Freetown, prayed for the right person to succeed, explaining that they have suffered a lot over the years.
“We are paying our market dues, yet still the market’s are filthy. The Police are chasing us from all angles for reasons best known to them,” she said.
The President of SLCTU, Foday Sahid Kamara, said they need their rights as citizens of the country, which is why they are throwing their support for Rev Bankole Gibson who is part of them as traders, and has the requisite knowledge to manage the Council.
