On the re-opening of SLPP Office … “We would never encourage violence” John Benjamin...

Football is a game loved by various people of race, colour or religion all over the world. The love for the sport has created a demand to watch the sports especially during the football seasons. For example the English Premier League, Italy- Serie A, Spain- La Liga, Germany- Bundesliga, France- Ligue 1, England FA cup and Champions League cup competitions are watched by their fans all over the world.
In this write up I will be using the Nigerian market as a case study because this is a country where the football viewing center business is in high demand due to the number of football fans of the various clubs. Football fans all over the world always find a way to connect with their favorite football clubs, however due to certain restrictions such as cost of owning a digital satellite decoder , television set, etc most people resort to the use of viewing centers to watch live matches. Its also a time of relaxation and debate on the clubs, the matches and players. What are the requirements to start this business? How do you manage the center to increase your earnings? How can you expand this business? These are questions that you need answers to when launching out.
A football viewing center that has a sitting capacity of 500 and for each football match and customers paying between N100 per match multiply that 500 by N100 and you will have a whopping N50,000 per match (approx. $150)! If you view 2-3 matches per day especially at weekends you stand to make about $500 per day or more if you sell drinks and food alongside tickets.
Here’s what Mr. Oludayo Joseph, a businessman who operates a football viewing center in Lagos had to say about his football viewing business:
“For Nigeria’s game, I made over N120,000 from tickets, food and drinks because people came with their friends, relatives and even children to watch the Super Eagles. This is a big boom for us. Our market is the European Champions League and other various local leagues in Europe, especially the English Premier League and the Spanish La Liga. I generate at least N30,000 from every EPL match.” That’s how lucrative this business is”
To start this business you will need the following :
1.A spacious venue located in a commercial area that can sit between 100-500 persons.
2.Benches or plastic chairs if you can afford them .
3.2-3 digital satellite decoders
4.2-3 large flat screen Tv’s
5.Fan or air conditioner if you can afford one.
6.A table and chair to sell/issue out tickets.
7.A fridge with drinks where you can sell drinks to earn extra income.
8.A white or black board to advertise up coming matches during the week and weekends.
9.A good quality electricity generating set.
10.Copies of football daily newspapers/magazines to sell to earn extra income.
11.Air freshner.
12.A UPS in case of power outage to keep the TV running
13.Extension sockets
14.Printed tickets
15.Ticket issuing staff /cleaner.
For any business to thrive it needs to be run and managed by competent staff. Make sure you are always present most of the time especially during matches. For the business to grow observe the following :
a. Advertise all the matches of the popular league’s outside the venue one week in advance to generate high patronage of your center.
b. If you have more capital and you want to make your viewing center top-notch, employ the services of a cook to sell pepper soup, small chops, recharge card vouchers, and cold drinks. You could even sell these things yourself. If you are married, or a good cook, you could set up a pepper soup joint beside your viewing center.
c.Another strategy to stay at the top of your game is by offering bonanzas or produce T-shirts with the name of your viewing centers printed on it. Be smart and creative. There’s so much money to be made in this business!
d. Treat your customers with respect. Customers are the backbone of every business! Be friendly to your customers. They are the sole reason you are still in business. Treat them with respect, and try to build personal relationships with them. You can offer credit facilities to those of them that are trustworthy but may not have money to watch a match.
On a final note, if you are currently unemployed, you could try out this business. It doesn’t require much capital to start and it’s very easy to manage, if you know what you are doing, the sky will be your starting point; and soaring higher will be a necessity as you become employer of Labour.
