The Deputy Minister of Justice, Arrow John Bockarie, yesterday tabled the long awaited Government White Paper on the report of the Constitutional Review Committee (CRC) on the review of the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone in Parliament.
After the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Report was published, there were a series of recommendations advocating for Constitutional change along the lines of a strengthened democracy, gender mainstreaming and better protection of human rights.
In 2006, the Peter Tucker Constitutional Review Commission was set up to review the 1991 Constitution taking cognizance of the recommendations of the TRC Report and a report was presented to President Ernest Koroma in 2008.
In 2012 the Constitutional Review Committee headed by Justice Edmond Cowan was established and its final report presented to the President on the 24 January 2017.
Since January to date people have been anxiously waiting for the publication of the Government White Paper that will contain the recommendations and the government responses.
The 2017 Government White was Gazetted on the 10 November 2017 and is now before the House of Parliament where it is expected to be for 21 days before becoming law if no objection is raised. The current Parliament will be dissolved on 7 December 2017. AMK/28/11/17
