As Community Led Total Sanitation kicks off Open defecation in middle of Kenema City

The Ministry of Health and Sanitation Health Education Division has held a one day sensitization meeting with Paramount Chiefs, teachers and other opinion leaders in the eastern region at the Kenema District Council office along Maxwell Khobe Street in Kenema.
 The programme coordinator at the education division Samuel Sesay in his statement said the ministry is aiming at introducing the concept of Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) across the country.
For this he says his ministry is soliciting the participation of communities to achieve the goals and raise broader awareness on sanitation and accelerate effort to achieve it. Mr Sesay called on everyone to come on board and help in achieving the aims of the government. Sesay disclosed that it is government’s aspiration to scale up its activities with the international year of sanitation to meet the millennium development goal by 2015.
As effort are being made to achieve the Community Led Total Sanitation across the country, most residents in Kenema city especially those who are visiting and are always at the Maxwell Khobe street market known as Fisheries market, openly defecate in the Lambayei stream that run across the city. The stream passes from Reservation, through Maxwell Khobe street by the market, Nyandeyama, crosses Blama road and Wahmann Abu road respectively.
The Fisheries market is just few meters from the Kenema District Council (KDC) hall and the police station on the same street and most of the authorities in the city and out of the city who ply the street constantly witness the ugly use of the stream at the market.
