Kabasa Lodge to be a 4 star hotel

Kabasa Lodge

Kabasa Lodge, located at the West End of Freetown at Juba Hill, is ready to be leased to potential investors because of its deplorable status. Doing so could transform the multipurpose structure into a four star hotel that will create employment opportunities and promote tourism.
Yesterday, Awoko sent a team of investigators at the Kabasa lodge and it was discovered that the building and its surrounding quarters are on the brink of collapse due to lack of maintenance and proper care by concerned authorities.
About a hundred squatters now reside in the building.
The swimming pool and other apartments are dirty and bushy while the surrounding is also scruffy, cramped and littered. The environment is untidy as the entrance gate into the building has already been turned into a garage and a tailor shop.
Most of the rooms are occupied by squatters who said they have been paying rent to the Government Property and Assets Commission at New England Ville.
Squatters and Residents of the area complained about the lack of water, toilet and medical facilities. As a result, they have been facing serious difficulties in fetching water and access to medical care.
Eugene Sawyer told Awoko that he has been squatting with his parents at the Kabasa Lodge building and its quarters for over 20 years and that life is very difficult at Kabasa Lodge because there is no transportation.
“We only use motor bikes to get down Juba Hill,” he said.
Pa Sallu Kamara, a former electrician at the building, said that since the CEC Construction Company completed the structure, several people have occupied the building such as the late Siaka Steven, an Israeli Diamond Investor (SCIPA) Valentine Strasser, ECOMOG and UNAMSIL.  And then the squatters took over.
He also noted that Kabasa Lodge has 15 apartments with four quarters and 16 apartments within the area and most of the structures are in a deplorable state.
The Chairman of Government Property and Assets Commission, Unisa Alim Sesay aka (Awoko) with no reference to this newspaper with his Executive Secretary Frank S.P. Lawson, and their Accountant Fatmata Amara, were interviewed for their own side of the story on the status of Kabasa lodge.
Unisa Alim Sesay, chairman of Government Property and Assets Commission, said that since he assumed office, many transformations  have taken place in the commission with mechanisms put in place to regulate government assets.
He said that plans are on the way to lease the structure to credible investors who may express interest in the building. As a result, all rent payments have been halted and an application form has been put in place to acquire Government properties.
Several documents were presented to Awoko for verification; however details of Kabasa Lodge rent syndicate will be published in our subsequent editions.
