President Ernest Koroma has officially commissioned the long awaited first phase of the Bumbuna hydro power plant of 50 megawatts and also unveiled a plaque at the Project site in Northern Sierra Leone after 30 years of construction.
He said the APC Government will not relent in spending every penny to make the Bumbuna project a reality and Bumbuna Phase 11 will soon commence for rapid economic growth and sustainable development and in the country.
The Director of Bumbuna Project Implementation Unit Abdulai Jalloh expressed thanks and appreciation to the Government, donors and the contractor for making the first phase of the Bumbuna project a success.
The Bumbuna Project Contractor Dr Carpitano said his construction company has completed the first phase of the project, and it is now the responsibility of the Government of Sierra Leone to ensure that Bumbuna is practical for the people.
The first phase of the Bumbuna project is expected to provide 50 megawatts but only 35 megawatts is currently available from Bumbuna; however the weak capacity to receive and also distribute power supply to transmission lines may also slow the process. The Bumbuna Project was funded by the Government of Italy, African Development Bank, DFID, World Bank –IDA and the Government of Sierra Leone and implemented by an Italian company named Salini Construttori.
Representatives from World Bank, DFID, ADB and the Italian Government promised to continue their support towards the development of the country and urged the Government to work hard to ensure Sierra Leone becomes the exporter of electricity to the Region, they also expressed the need to protect and conserve the environment.
The Chair Board of Directors at the National Power Authority Dr. Modu Peacock highlighted progress and challenges facing the National Power Authority and assured that the Bumbuna project will help to increase power generation in the country.
