MAAT group Launched in Sierra Leone

The MAAT group a newly established Organization that stands for the study of governance with its major objective geared towards giving lectures, providing learning materials, setting up discussion groups was officially launched over the weekend at Goderich in Freetown. The Group aims to target primary, secondary and tertiary levels, to study African governance with special reference to the core values and principles as alternative governance for adoption and implementation.
Addressing the audience the founder Dr. Cecil Blake said the reason why Africa is trailing behind with regards to progress, was directly linked with poor governance. He said most of the African leaders cannot all by themselves initiate ideas on core African values for better governance, instead solely rely on principles fashioned by the West.
Dr.Blake added that the same white masters who had wrongly indoctrinated these African leaders today the same leaders are reining abuses and terror on their subjects. He stressed that was the reason why the ordinary African should try to live and use their values and principles as a basis for governance of their society. The founder said MAAT means many things  as its core values and principles which stand out for justice, fairness, respect,
rightness, truth, order, unity, integrity, respect for authority and for the ordinary man and for the rule of law.
He out rightly condemned why Africans are so overwhelmed in paying external allegiance to people of the West much more than to their nation. He further stressed that Africans should study African laws, core values and principles in order to appreciate who we are and to recognised that there is a lot in our tradition and culture of which we should be proud.
Mr. Blake urged members of the public to join the organization as it is non partisan.
The chairman Dr.Henry Joko-Smart said the initiative of the group is a wake up call and that the only way forward is to make sure the youth are involved in such a programme. The former Commissioner said any society that does not have values and culture, has nothing to show of with regards to its culture and customs. He said the Western culture has completely destroyed the youth, making them vulnerable to many things in society.
Professor Cecil Magbail Fyle in his contribution expressed satisfaction for the new initiative. The professor said he would work closely with the group in the dissemination of the information. He said only that Sierra Leoneans don’t read but that his subsequent publication about the  history of this country, clearly touched on the essence of the values and in which place in our society it belongs. He said it would be difficult to pin it down on the present youth, thinking of their manner of reasoning in doing things. But if the ideology is taking down to the kindergarten at this stage there must be success since no two human beings are the same.
The NEC boss further assured the public and the donor community of the NEC’s efficiency and professionalism in the conduct of electoral processes.
She underscored that members of staff of the Commission are now motivated after most of them have undergone professional training in Electoral Administration and Civic Education. She further disclosed that a pilot programme of the training is being conducted simultaneously in the four regions.
The NEC Chairperson also revealed that from 2010 the Commission will begin full time training countrywide up to 2013 and by that time they would have concluded the training. It is expected that by then almost all Sierra Leoneans would have known what credible election is about and their civic responsibility.
She called on donors to continue to support the Commission/activities commission as we move towards a better Sierra Leone not just for present but for the future generation.
