Medical emergency… Over 500,000 madness in Sierra Leone- Dr. Nahim

Sierra Leone’s foremost and the only Consultant Psychiatrist attached to the Ministry of Health and Sanitation Dr. Edward Nahim has stated in an exclusive interview that the number of  mad  people is now approaching 500,000 Sierra Leoneans who are reported mentally imbalanced.
Dr. Nahim who has 37 years experience as Psychiatrist considered this situation as “worrying and alarming” for the entire health administrators in not only Sierra Leone but the world over. The number of people who volunteer to specialize in psychiatry is very scanty more especially in Sierra Leone which is trying to recover from the dust of the civil war.
He stated that the reason for the appalling rate of madness particularly Sierra Leone is as a result of population explosion. The country’s population has doubled during the last 28 years.
With many people around us especially young people, there are problems of employment and drop-out; even those who find themselves in offices, their salaries are not commensurate to their work which is a recipe for irresistible stress. Those who could not cope with the apparent disillusion would take to drug and consequently go out of control.
Presently, he said, the only psychiatric Home in the country is the government’s supported Kissy Mental Home. The government is however providing every facility in the hospital free of cost including payment of staff.
The institution is greatly contributing to the reduction of the rate of madness in the country.
In the area of personnel, Dr. Nahim stated that there are no trained and qualified psychiatrists in the country probably because of the duration of the course.
He maintained that one of the remedies to the situation is to promote the socio-economic well-being of the people by creating employment and improving conditions of service for medical practitioners.
