UNFPA intensify ICPD awareness in Sierra Leone
The United Nations Fund for Population (UNFPA) in collaboration with the Government of Sierra Leone, civil society and the media has intensified awareness raising campaign on the United Nations International Conference on Population Development in Sierra Leone to mark the 15 anniversary of ICPD.
The UNFPA Country Representative Ratidzai Ndoluvu has reiterated that UNFPA is committed and determined to continue their support to the people and the Government of Sierra Leone in the improvement of health care delivery.
She also said that UNFPA is taking a look at progress and challenges in the Cairo conference on population development (ICPD) so as to increase awareness in reproductive health and to establish alliances on population development with relevant stakeholders in society. Several activities were organised by UNFPA to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the United Nations International Conference on Population Development in the country which commenced with training of Parliamentarians at Parliament Building in Freetown. UNFPA also organised a poster contest for the Regional Headquarter Towns of BO, Kenema and Makeni to display messages of population development, Gender base violence, Health issues and HIV and Aids campaign for the common understanding of the general public. Stakeholders were also engaged in a workshop on national population policy validation; however the Government of Sierra Leone’s contribution is yet to be released for action.
UNFPA in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development and NCP also launched the state of the world population report (SWOP) at the Miatta Conference Hall Youyi Building in Freetown, followed by launching of the 2008 DHS Report. UNFPA also partnered with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation to clean the PCMH hospital and to also distribute baby packs to over 50 children who were born during the month of October. During the 15th anniversary celebration of ICPD in Sierra Leone several statements were made by Madam Diarra Sesay, Serian Kamara, Aiah Lebbie Sosokonneh and a host of UNFPA staff in the country.The Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Development Dr. Richard Konteh also joined UNFPA to celebrate the ICPD anniversary in Sierra Leone and expressed Government commitments in partnering with UNFPA to undertake development programs.The deputy Minister commended UNFPA for their support towards health care delivery and youth empowerment and encouraged stakeholders to join UNFPA in the fight against the high rate of infant mortality rate and HIV and Aids to save lives.
