Muslim Congress wins UNFPA Western Area debatecompetition
The Youth and Adolescent Network on Population conducted a debate competition in which selected schools in the Western Area participated at China House, Brookfields, and Freetown. Participants were drawn from Saint Joseph’s Convent, the Annie Walsh Memorial School, The Muslim Congress and the Albert Academy School.
Initially, the Annie Walsh was to compete with Saint Joseph’s Convent on a specified topics provided by the organizers. Unfortunately the Annie Walsh was absent for the competition which automatically qualified Saint Joseph’s Convent for the Final.
Similarly, the Albert Academy was disqualified on the grounds of misrepresentation. The competition catered for students in the JSS category where Albert Academy had to send a representation drawn from SSS111. The judges apparently used their discretion and disqualified Albert Academy consequently qualifying Muslim Congress for the final.
The final took place between Saint Joseph’s Convent and the Sierra Leone Muslim Congress. The debate was circled around the topic “it is better to be a leader than a follower” on which the Muslim Congress was to speak for the motion and St. Joseph against the motion.
The debate went on with students perfectly prevailing upon the queen’s language on their respective motions in a bid to emerge victorious.
Formidable presentation of needed facts and opinions on given motions in a well-concise manner was proffered by students from the Muslim Congress; with the displayer of their conversance with the English language in an impeccable manner. It was however possible for them to identify key issues on the motion “it is better to be a leader than a follower” thereby clinching the first position meritoriously.
Prior to the commencement of the competition, the Acting Coordinator for Youth and Adolescent Network on Population Mr. Musa Swaray stated that the programme was organized to build the capacity of students in not only the western area but the entire nation as a whole. The competition, he started further, would promote the communication skills of students particularly in secondary schools thereby building a firm foundation for good performances in both internal and external exams.
The Representative from UNFPA Fiona Kaikai mentioned that her organization is working in partnership with the Ministry of Education to promote education and further aid in the elimination of HIV/AIDS. She reiterated that the programme was primarily conducted to contribute to the reduction of high rate drop-out in the country which is as a result of poor capacity building of students in not only the JSS category but the senior cadre as well.
She appealed to all school administrations to be participatory as the effort will enhance the future betterment of the present generation and the generation yet unborn.
