42 Women exhibition at British Council

An exhibition celebrating the hopes and spirit of women in Sierra Leone, by British photo journalist Lee Karen Stow was over the weekend opened at the British Council Cafe in Freetown.
The exhibition entitled ‘42 Women of Sierra Leone' is a selection of portraits taken as part of a long-term documentary photography study in collaboration with the women themselves. It aims to highlight life expectancy for women in Sierra Leone and the challenging situations faced by women today.
Stow, a resident of Freetown's official twin city in the UK, Kingston upon Hull, has visited Sierra Leone a number of times, living with the women in their homes and experiencing their daily life. Stow said: ''In 2008 I too turned 42 years old and the knowledge that my chances of survival are double those of the women here purely because I live in the West both haunts and angers me. I made a commitment to use photography to tell the stories of the women here and to show their resilience and optimism, which never ceases to inspire and humble me.''
Her first visit was in February 2007, as founder of the grassroots project Wilberforce Women which runs basic skills photography learning for women in Sierra Leone interested in photography. The project has encouraged and assisted a number of women to form their own photography group. Members of that group have visited the UK on further media skills workshops. They are now using photography for creative expression and to advocate for change on issues which affect them; many are also now earning an income from their training.
The exhibition, sponsored by Arts Council England and the British Council, is currently on tour having been shown in the UK, the USA and Poland. Next year a revised exhibition opens at the Royal Commonwealth Society in London, UK, before beginning a five-week tour of the Pacific North West, to include USA and Canada.
Images will be available to buy; all money will go directly to the grassroots project Wilberforce Women.
