Climate Change worries Government & UNFPA
The United Nations Fund for Population (UNFPA) in collaboration with the Government of Sierra Leone through the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development has officially launched the State Of The World Population that highlights the negative impact of climate change on the world population development at the Miatta Conference Center in Freetown.
The state of The World Population is an annual event of the United Nations Fund for Population with relevant stakeholders in population developments, civil society and the media to look at progress and challenges facing the world population.
This year’s State Of The World Population focused on the theme ‘facing a challenging world’- women population and climate which indicates that climate change is gradually undermining world population development.
SBE Scott Director of Planning at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development chaired the launching ceremony as he stated that the world population is faced with a serious challenge of climate change and global warming that has destroyed lives, properties and the environment.
The Chairman concluded his statement by saying “climate change is about people and only the people can put a stop to it by taking action now to avoid catastrophe.”
The Director of Conservation Society Sierra Leone Daniel D. Saffa said climate change has adversely affected Sierra Leone and expressed the need for climate change adaptation adding that the country had 361 rivers but only 290 are now flowing with water while Islands have been reduced from 10 to 7 Islands as a result of climate change.
The UNFPA Country Representative Ratidzai Ndlovu out- lined some of the consequences of climate change on the world population and its impact on population development; she noted that the real trouble affecting the world is poverty, inequality, Justice and environmental sustainability. She called on stakeholders to ensure the protection of natural wealth.
The Minister of Social Welfare Gender and Children’s Affairs Dr. Soccoh Kabia also spoke about the negative impact of climate change which causes global warming that ends with drought. He encouraged stakeholders to formulate policies to mitigate climate change.
The Minister of Lands and Environment Denis Sandy emphasized the consequence of climate change towards population development as 75% of the population in Sierra Leone lives on agriculture. He further spoke about the need to support UNFPA to ensure that the project is accomplished.
