Sierra Leone News: Chinese Ambassador’s Wife hosts First Lady

First Lady Sia Koroma & Ambassador Zhao and Madam MaoWife of the Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Mao Xuehong, last Thursday hosted Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Sia Nyama Koroma at the Chinese Embassy to celebrate International Women’s Day.
Madam Mao expressed delight for hosting the First Lady of their host country in oberving an international event such as the International Women’s Day. She paid tribute to the participation of other women stakeholders which she noted added warmth and pomp to the occasion.
She said women play significant roles in the promotion of their societies, enhancing economic development and advancing human civilization. “It is fair to say that women’s emancipation has driven the liberation of human beings and progressed our societies,” Madam Mao stated.
She stated that the destiny of Chinese women has changed greatly because of the opportunities accorded to them by the Chinese state. “Because they now have faith, self respect and esteem; because they are now self reliant and strengthened, Chinese women are constantly improving and outdoing themselves,” .
The Chinese Ambassador’s wife paid tribute to the commitment of Sierra Leone’s First Lady to the welfare of women and children, describing her as “a wonderful woman”. She noted that her leadership has put the issue of Sierra Leonean women and children on the international stage because of what she noted as Mrs. Koroma’s expertise in women and children affairs. “Her expertise and her commitment to maternal health care service delivery and the education of children has made her an exceptional woman and a role model woth emulating,” she stated.
She commended the efforts of women organizations in the country in esneuring the “emancipation of the women of Sierra Leone” which to her confirms that the country has determined and committed women leaders that are willing to go at any lenght to improve the status of women and girls in the country. She went on to note with admiration the determination of the women of Sierra Leone in ensuring the upliftment of the status and welfare by engaging in all forms of work aimed at giving them independence.
Responding, the First Lady acknowledged the warmth of the Chinese hospitality extended to her, wife of the Vice President, Kadijatu Sam Sumana and other women invitees marking observance of the a day set out to celebrate achievements of women around the world and to reflect on the challenges they face in their demand for equality, opportunities and the right to be in their various countries.
She paid tribute to the commitment of the President and Government of Sierra Leone to the promotion and advancement of women said reported that since the last celebrations, the government has never waivered in its commitment to the course of women and girls in the country.
“The declaration of a Public holiday throughout the country on March 8 each year, the dedication of a whole pillar in the Agenda for Prosperity relating to gender equality and women empowerment, a free health care for pregnant women, lactating mothers and children under five, the appointment of women in key decision-making positions of governance, promoting gender responsive legislations for the protection and advancement of women and a gender sensitive constitutional review process that is ongoing, are solid foundations for women to unlock the full potentials of women and girls for their rights and opportunitiesin all spheres of governance in the country, Mrs. Sia Koroma noted.
