Sierra Leone News: For Academic Crimes …Education Ministry dismisses Dean, Lecturers for fake certificates

mikalu-bahThe Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Dr. Minkailu Bah has disclosed that his Ministry has dismissed over ten lecturers and a Dean from the Freetown Teachers College (FTC) and the Ernest Bai Koroma University for various academic crimes ranging from fake certificates to selling grades.
He made this disclosure yesterday, 8th November, 2016 while he was sharing the Ministry’s achievements and challenges to Parliamentarians in the Well of Parliament.
Dilating on the issues, he said they have made many successes including the establishment of two new universities namely, the Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology and the Limkokwing University which is a public private partnership. He also indicated that in partnership with UNICEF, his Ministry has completed the construction of a broadcasting building. He said they are merely waiting for the equipment to arrive and that it would be used solely for the broadcasting of educational programmes among others.
Highlighting some of the challenges, Minister Bah noted, “What we are seeing in our schools is terrible.”
The Minister of Education in a disappointing and despondent tone said eight senior lecturers who he named as, Sorie I.S. Turay, M. Conteh, Peter Mustapha, Osman A. Kargbo, Sullay Koroma, among others in different Departments and Joseph S. Kabia, Dean of a Faculty in the Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology have been dismissed for giving grades to girls who do not take exams. The Dean he said was found to be culpable for apparently aiding and abetting the crimes.
“We should start naming and shaming people so that people will know those that are killing the educational system,” he bellowed, adding that in the Freetown Teachers College, a lecturer Saidu Kabia has been dismissed for committing double offences.
Dr. Bah said Mr. Saidu Kabia failed the best student in mathematics stating that the student challenged the result and requested that the paper should be re-marked adding that the paper was marked and the student passed. He furthered that while that investigation was ongoing, Mr. Kabia while invigilating an examination in the college, took one of the answer sheets from a certain lady home and did not return it to the College until after three days.
He continued afterwards that the findings of the investigation showed that the answer sheet Mr. Kabia took home belonged to his girlfriend.
The Minister of Education said also at the Freetown Teachers College, one Alvin Lappia was selling grades stating that while they were investigating him, it was noticed that the lecturer has two West African Senior Secondary School Examination Certificates and has no certificate that qualifies him to be a lecturer.
Dr. Bah said there are other colleges with similar crimes and the Ministry has also dealt with them likewise.
He promised, “I will deal with all such cases involving fake lecturers by ensuring they are dismissed from our academic institutions.”
At the end of the briefing, the Speaker of Parliament noted, “We have faith in you and you are a real worker”.
