Sierra Leone Sports: Former players give back to Club

Two Ex-players of Old Edwardians Cricket Club, Augustine Thorpe in the USA and Abubakarr Bebaks Bangura based in England, gave new assorted cricket kits worth over $1,500 USD to their former club for use in the ongoing Mercury T20 Premier League.
The current Head Coach of the Club, Abdul Coco Sesay, received the donation of 2 bats, 14 pairs of shoes, two batting pads, 14 pair socks and two sets of gloves.
Presenting the items, Abubakarr Bebaks Bangura said the donation was done to boost the club and motivate the players to play hard in the league as they are currently in top form having won 2 out of 3 matches played.
Bangura told the players that this is just the beginning, adding there is more to come. Saying their love for Edwards and passion for the game inspired them to give back to their club.
“Our aim is to make Old Edwardians the richest Cricket Club in the country. We have so many of our colleagues who we all played cricket together for the school and the club in the 90’s within and outside Sierra Leone. We will ensure we bring all of them on board to support you”, he assured.
The former Edwards man said, “In our active playing days we didn’t have sufficient kits to play the game but that didn’t stop us from playing the sport. We managed what we had to sustain our club. We are glad that you also follow our footsteps”.
“Had it not being for Coach Coco and few other guys around, there will be no Edwards. But thank God we’ve decided to take the lead and I’m assuring you that we will provide adequate equipment for you”.
On the facility to train, he said they will see what they can do to renovate the net at their school compound to give the young cricketers the opportunity to train and improve their skills.
Bangura added, “The boys deserve the best to produce good results. We will continue to work on project that will develop the club so that you guys will be in the position to compete for titles. He promised to give the team Le5 million if they win the Premier League.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the club, Head Coach Abdul Coco Sesay said the kits were presented to them at the right time as they were urgently in need of the items because most of the ones they’ve been using have depreciated and they are not good to play in the Premier League.
The Coach remarked, “The donation is timely; we were managing old set of kits for the past 3 years. Now that we’ve got this ones from our fellow Edwardians we are very pleased, and we thank them very much for the gesture”.
One of the players who joined the club from Mid-West this season, Lansana Lamin noted that they appreciated the kits with lots of excitements. Stating, it is a big boost for them, especially for the young players who were finding it difficult to provide playing shoes to play.
