Sierra Leone Sports: Karate Championship to attract over 50 competitors

The Sierra Leone Karate Federation (SLKF) will be organizing a Karate championship in honour of the Japanese Ambassador, Tsutomu Himeno at the Siaka Stevens Stadium and Radisson Blu in, Freetown on January 25, 26 and 27 this year.
In total, more than 50 athletes are expected to compete in the championships, which will begin at the Siaka Stevens Stadium on Thursday 25 January with a national seminar and training for coaches, referees and judges.
While competitors of all age levels from different schools across the country will be competing in the elimination series at the Siaka Steven Stadium on the 25th and 26thbefore taking part in the semi-finals and finals on Saturday January 27 at Radisson Blu.
The athletes will be vying for the top honours at the championship in which the eventual gold medal winner will received Le2.5 million, the silver medallist will take home Le 1.5 million and the bronze medal winner winner will as well bag home Le 1 million.
President of Sierra Leone Karate Federation, Shian Victor Amara disclosed that the events will range from 10 kg to 75 kg in both men and women categories. Stating that an examination will be held for the referees in the training because the best 10 will be selected to officiate in the championship.
The President emphasized that the competition is for all members of the association including senior athletes, beginners, veterans and the executive. “All of us will compete according to our different weight category. We are doing this because we want to sell the image of our sports and as well inspire others to join us”.
The National Coach, Sensei Suleiman Bah, said he is envisioning great performances from the athletes’ based on the level of training they’ve acquired in the past months. Noting, there will be shocking results in the cadet and senior categories.
Sensei Bah acknowledged, “It will be an intense competition as each athlete will want to impress the technical team so as to secure slot for the Africa regional zone-two championship which will be held in Freetown later this year”.
