Sierra Leone Sports: The Mayor’s Trophy in Makeni

Last year, sports journalists in the northern region solicited stakeholders to support an organized football competition within the municipality. But, those pleas fell on deaf ears. According to the northern Chair of SWASAL Sheku Turray, “We met the Mayor of Makenie, Sunkarie Kabba, in early January 2018 and asked her to sponsor a tournament to be played in Makeni. She immediately gave her blessing to sponsor the football competition. So we named the tournament “the Mayor’s Trophy.”
He said 16 teams will participate in the competition and paid Le100,000 to register. The Mayor volunteered to pay for all teams and provide prizes at the end of the tournament.
According to Alimamy Kewullay Kanu, the PRO SWASAL North, the trophies are on the shores of Sierra Leone from England and it will be presented to the teams when the tournament begins.
The Assistant Secretary General SWASAL North, Tejan Fatoma, said the opening ceremony was on the 26 January 2018 at the Makeni Wusum Field Makeni.
Comprehensive Academy (MCA) Rangers FC defeated Sowa FC by a goal to nil. The goal came in the last quarter of the game when Ibrahim Kalokoh aka Orkallon, a former player of Allan Thababan now Sebora FC, headed the ball into the back of the net to secure the three points for MCA Rangers.
Match day two was humiliating for Kamanda FC as they were trashed by 8-0 by Rogbaneh Strikers. Suffian Kalokoh scored a hat trick, while Moses Z. Bangura and Issa Bella Kamara got a braced each and Tormentor got the last goal for Rogbaneh Strikers.
In group B, Mohamed Bangura aka Sakteh, scored the only goal for the Sierra Leone Youths Transformation Organization (SLYTO) in the half hour of the first half as they defeated Independent FC to secured the all-important three points. The remaining two teams in the group played their first matches as well and Mission Lane Strikers also defeated FC Seattle by two goals to nil. The goals were scored by Salifu Thoronka in the 5th minute and Patrick Conteh in the 12th minute, respectively. As it stands, Mission Lane Strikers are leading on goals ahead of SLYTO FC in Group B. The competition will continue today.
