Sierra Leone Sports: No medals for Sierra Leone from Commonwealth Games

Sierra Leone had a disappointing showing and did not win any medals. There was a glimmer of hope in the men’s beach volleyball when Patrick Lombi and Abubakar Kamara beat the Sri Lankans after losing to Canada and Scotland. But, they were quickly dismissed from the tournament by Australians, McHugh and Schumann, in their next match.
The squash duo of Ernest Jomblo and Yusif Mansaray were “no shows” for two of their matches and are rumoured to have disappeared from the Athlete’s Village.
The table tennis pair of Rene Benjamin and Emmanuel Gboyah were slaughtered by the Canadian team of Wang and Medjugorac, 1-11, 4-11, 4-11, finishing without winning one game.
In the women’s 800-metre race, Mariama Conteh finished in last place in her heat with a time of 2:16.57, which was 17 seconds behind the heat winner. She failed to qualify for further 800-metre runs.
In women’s 76kg wrestling, 28-year old, Hajaratu Kamara, lost to the more experienced and dominant Canadian wrestler, Erica Weibe. Hajaratu Kamara went on to wrestle for the bronze medal against English wrestler, Georgina Nelthorpe, who took the match easily winning 10 points to none.
David Conteh was the Sierra Leonean wrestler in the 86kg class. He wrestled his way into the bronze medal match but was buried by the English medal winner, Syerus Eslami, 0-11. Eslami overpowered Conteh on the mat and proved overwhelming.
