Sierra Leone News: Accused thief dies in prison

In 2012, Maligie Kamara was accused of stealing 4,500 cement blocks valued Le67,500,000 as well as two stacks of iron rods valued at Le400,000 entrusted to him by one Karifu Jawara for safe keeping. He was arrested and charged with Fraudulent Conversion contrary to the Larceny Act of 1916.
Kamara has been in custody for about five years with little progress made into the matter. Kamara fell ill while in custody. At the Siaka Stevens Street High Court, the presiding Justice, Sengu Koroma, promised to acquit and discharge him.
On Monday 2 July 2018, Correctional Service Officers informed the Court that the accused had died in custody. The cause of death was not disclosed. Maligie Kamara was 33-years old when he was arrested and charged with the offence. According to one of the officers, the death certificate of the deceased was with the Master and Registrar of the Judiciary.
The Judge said he will finally close the matter next Monday.
