Sierra Leone News: First appearance by alleged cocaine importer

On 5 August 2018, at the Freetown International Airport, Port Loko District, Cyprian Anayo Ndefo was allegedly found with 35 pellets of cocaine weighing 0.6 kilogram. The police claim that the accused imported the pellets of cocaine from Brazil into Sierra Leone on a flight with KLM Royal Dutch Airline.
He was arrested and charged with Conspiracy, Importation of Prohibited Drugs to wit Cocaine and Unlawful Possession of Prohibited Drugs contrary to the National Drug Control Act of 2008. He made his first appearance before Magistrate Santigie Bangura at the Siaka Stevens Street Magistrate Court in Freetown. The charges were put to him but he did not take a plea.
His defence counsel pleaded with the Court to put him on bail but the prosecution objected on ground that the accused was a foreigner. The Magistrate refused him bail and sent him on remand at the Correctional Centre in Freetown. The matter was adjourned to 29 August 2018.
