Sierra Leone Sports: Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation organizes first athletics meet

Morlai Kargbo said the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation (ISSF) Sierra Leone, has recently successfully organized its first Islamic Athletics sports meet at the Brima Attouga Mini Stadium, Freetown.
An Islamic sports gathering which attracts different areas, from Waterloo to Goderich, was well attended by Muslims across the Western Area.
According to the President of the federation, Abdul Karim Sesay, this event which moulds athletes on the Islamic side of life, allowing only female competitors with Hijab to compete will be an annual event with all sporting disciplines involved changing the perception of so many Sierra Leonean Muslims who thought sports and Islam does not cross the same path.
“The initial motive was to stage this event at the main bowl of the Siaka Stevens Stadium including all sports disciplines but due to the stadium’s renovation process, we decided to organize it at the Brima Attouga stadium with athletics for a start”, he intimated.
He said the ISSF has been in existence for over two decades and Tuesday’s event was in concurrence with the Supreme Islamic Council (S.I.C) whose national president, Alhaji Tanu Jalloh, was in attendance.
To blend real competition and fun, a walking race for both men and women was done by Sheiks, Imams and Haja’s while the “Tug of Peace” was uniquely contested by Sheiks in their gowns and Islamic robes.
According to Alhaji Tanu Jalloh, the Supreme Islamic Council works in partnership with the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation and disclosed that, its world president is the crown prince of Saudi Arabia. He further affirmed the S.I.C and ISSF staged this annual event to raise the “No prohibition of Sports in Islam” awareness.
“This year marks the start of an event which will unite all Muslims across the country”, he expressed with optimism. He said, next year would see the inclusion of all five regions and confirm that, the competition will have no stagnant date or a particular Islamic holiday for it staging, but will be organized on any important Islamic holiday.
“The five regions will have to go through qualifying processes with the ones coming on top partaking in the main showpiece in Freetown”, Alhaji Tanu asserts.
After a sublime performance, Black house repping zone four scored 166 points edging closest challengers, zone one (white house) who scored 132 points to claim the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation first championship. Zone three (blue house) and zone two (yellow house) accumulated 97 and 69 points respectively. 25/8/18
