Sierra Leone News: Miss Sierra Leone becomes the face of tourism

Miss Sierra Leone, Sarah Laura Tucker, will become the face of Sierra Leone at the International French Travel Market (IFTM) tourism fair, from Tuesday 25 to Friday 28 September 2018, in Paris, France. On Saturday 22 September 2018, Tucker received an airline ticket and a $2,000 USD allowance from the Ministry of Tourism. IFTM is one of the leading travel and tourism trade shows in France held annually at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles. It is a trade event and includes players in the travel sector – from tour operators and travel agencies to coach operators, airlines, event agencies and so on. At IFTM, visitors can get comprehensive information, compare offers and get to know the latest developments and trends. The National Tourist Board Acting General Manager, Fatmata Abe-Osagie, said, “At the end of the Miss Sierra Leone beauty pageant, the beauty queen takes up the mantle to be the face of the country and the tourism sector.” France has been Sierra Leone’s top market in tourism in the early 80’s and 90’s pointing out… “It is but fit to make a big re-launch for the French market,” she said. The Director of Tourism, Mohamed Jalloh, said this is an opportunity for Sierra Leone to rebrand given the fact that the country’s international image has been smeared with war and deadly disease. “There is a high need for us to rebrand our country… with the presence of Miss Sierra Leone I believe we will attract lots of visitors, tourists and potential investors to our stand,” he averred.    The Minister of Tourism said, “I made a suggestion, if Sierra Leone is going to be successful, Miss Sierra Leone is going to be the brand of tourism… We want her to speak as an ambassador for Sierra Leone,” the Minister pointed out.
