Sierra Leone Sports: We are going to scope talent in schools – Oness Johnson

The President of the Sierra Leone Taekwondo Association, Oness Johnson, said they are taking the sport into the schools to scope interest and talent. That is why we decided to go to Amaraiyah Junior Secondary School to do some test sessions to meet children that might have potential in the sport. Johnson said that before the year ends they should have gone to many schools both in Freetown and in the provinces to spot more children that they will train. He said visiting these schools is part of the international training they did this year that they need to focus on the youth and these youth can be seen in schools that is why they are going to the school before going to the communities. The Technical Director of the association, Mohamed Kamara, said those children that have been ear-marked by the association will soon start to train. The Technical Director revealed that after the schools they will be going to the communities and in each community they will introduce the sport. They will organize competitions where they will identify potential athletes. Those athletes will be trained by the technical team. One of the kids, Mohamed Sesay, said that they are happy for such training and that it was nice when over 50 children are in one place for over some hours doing test session on Taekwondo which was very good for them. He stated that within an hour most of them were able to learn some of the basics of the sport and he went further to appeal to the association that they need some of such session if they want them to grow.
