Sierra Leone News: Connaught Hospital gets two refurbished operating rooms

Orange Sierra Leone, in collaboration with Goal Sierra Leone and Kings SL on Friday 2nd November 2018, handed over two renovated theatres to the Ministry of Health and Sanitation at the Connaught Hospital. The pediatric and orthopedic theatres at the Connaught Hospital were in deplorable condition, which made work difficult for health practitioners and the patients they are looking after. Pediatric surgery is a subspecialty of surgery involving the surgery of fetuses, infants, children, adolescents and young adults, whiles orthopedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. The Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Fadlu Deen noted, “Today is a very important day in the history of the Connaught Hospital. We are trying to improve the health sector and such contributions are very important in our drive.” A representative from Goal, Anna Fraenzel, said they have been operating in Sierra Leone since the early 1990’s and are happy to support the health sector and hopefully make Sierra Leoneans more healthy. The Corporate Affairs Director at Orange Sierra Leone, Barry Honna, said those projects emanated from 2017 mudslide and flashfloods disaster that killed hundreds of Sierra Leoneans. The pressure, which the hospital received during that period was enormous, leaving other victims stranded as a result of facilities crisis. “We contacted our parent body in Paris, Orange Foundation, and we were provided with 20,000 Euros,” which he said they used to renovate those theatres. The Director said that it is a valuable asset for the people of Sierra Leone and they will continue to stay side by side with the health ministry. Giving the keynote address, the Minister of Health and Sanitation, Dr. Alpha Wurie, thanked all the supporting partners and said, “Much can be done with little funds only if it is well managed. Surgery is slowly becoming a primary health activity and such theatres are very useful especially in the Connaught Hospital.”
