Sierra Leone News: MPs to engage media and Civil Society today on 2019 budget

Members of Parliament (MPs) will today Wednesday 7th November 2018 engage members of the press and Civil Societies on issues relating to the procedures that will enable them to properly vet and analyze the 2019 budget that is before the House. According to the Chairman of the Legislative Committee Honourable Daniel Brima Koroma these issues and procedures need to be respected is in the interest of good, transparent and effective governance. The issues highlighted in the letter are that the 3 days allotted for the debate is not enough for them to properly debate the budget. Further that the budget presentation should be furnished to MPs together with other documents containing breakdown of how the figures stated in the budget are to be expended, but which has still not been are given to the MPs. Lastly that in support of the Executive Order No 1 (control of excess spending and harmonization of government payroll), MPs need to be furnished with the full list of Government payroll to be used as guide throughout the budget approval process. A leaked document posted on social media alleging that MPs are demanding 300 percent salary increase together with other allowances has led to widespread criticism. As a result the MPs have been calling for the harmonization of the wage bill as a way of ensuring they support the Government and President Bio in reducing wastages through excessive salary and allowance.
