Sierra Leone News: NATCOM shuts down two radio stations

The National Telecommunication Commission (NATCOM) has shut down Victory FM and Positive Vibes FM 88.5 radio stations for illegal operations. The closure of the two radio stations was part of NATCOM’s drive to ensure that media institutions obtain licences before operation. According to the Deputy Director General of NATCOM, Daniel Kaitibi, they came to know about the existing illegal media institutions operating without license. He pointed out that Victory radio obtained a license to operate in Moyamba, but was broadcasting from Freetown, adding that Positive Vibes radio station was running illegally in the country. He maintained, “NATCOM is committed to weeding out all illegal media houses operating in the country,” adding that institutions must go through the right channels in order to get things done properly. The Deputy Director General called on media institution’s that are yet to pay their licence fees to do so immediately, stressing that severe action will be taken against defaulters. According to the mandate of the commission those who operate media institutions illegally are likely to face punishment such as cancellation of their licences, a fine or a court action. All attempts to get to the side of the radio station management proved futile.
