Sierra Leone Sports: Sierra Leone Golf Open begins today

The first Sierra Leonean golf professional, James Lebbie, who resides in the USA, said it will not be easy for Sierra Leone golfers to win Golf Open because they are not playing golf the way it should be played. For the past two years, the tournament has been won by a Ghanaian. Lebbie said he has won several golf opens and the way golf tournaments were organized in the past was far better than now. He stated if not for the current captain, Arne Johnsen, the golf club would have been nowhere. He said before somebody is part of a committee he or she must be a golfer so he or she will have passion for the sports. He also stated that for a small golf club like this we are supposed to have over 10 professionals but they can only boast of three professionals. All that is affecting the game in Sierra Leone. The Captain of the Freetown Golf Club, Arne Johnasen, said the Sierra Leone Golf Open started in the early 1960’s, and the first winner of the Sierra Leone Golf open was J. Finlay in 1962, the open was also won by Sierra Leonean golfers in the 70’s by F. Bangura, the 80’s and, 90’s by Bureh Kargbo, James Lebbie and Jerry Dumbuya. Since the recommencement of the Sierra Leone open in 2011 the tournament has been won by the following golfers:

2011- Gordon Sei – Ghana.

2013 – Amos Korblar – Ghana.

2016 – Vincent Torgah – Ghana.

2017 – Vincent Torgah – Ghana.
