Sierra Leone Sports: Salone golfer reclaims Open Tournament championship – wins $10,000

Sierra Leonean professional golfer, Paul Kargbo, has ended the Salone slump with a win at the Golf Open as he emerged winner in Freetown over the weekend. Kargbo went home with $10,000 USD while the runner up, John A. Kargbo of Sierra Leone received $5,000 USD as prize money. The third place winners: it was a tie, took home $3,000 USD. Paul Kargbo, in last year’s Sierra Leone Golf Open came in 12th position but this year he was very focused. On Day One, he hit a 70, or one under par, which is 71. On Day Two, he hit 69. Day Three saw a 71 and Day Four, he hit a 76 to make a total of 286. In second position was 18-year old, John A. Kargbo, another Sierra Leone golfer, who made a total score of 288 over the four days of competition.   The position of third position was a tied between Samba P. Niany and Amos Karblah of Ghana, who both scored a total of 289. Paul Kargbo said that he was very happy to finish first in the tournament and attributed his success to hard work and constant practice. “It is a great honour for me. Hard work and keeping to my game plans was the reason for this success.” He said he started playing golf in 1986 but this is the first tournament win. , According to the Administrative Secretary of the Freetown Golf Club, Sheku T. Bangura, who is also the chief starter, 40 professional golfers, from Sierra Leone, and Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia took part in the competition. Two years ago the former President of the Freetown Golf Club, Yada Williams, said the Sierra Leone Golf open championship is the biggest in the sub region, which is why they are proud of the event.
He described the Sierra Leone golf open championship as the premier open event in the country where different countries come together to compete in grand style.
