Sierra Leone News: Le14.5m fine for unlawful drug possession

Nine young men have been fined Le14.5 million after pleading guilty to unlawful possession of cannabis sativa and frequenting a place where marijuana is smoked. They were arrested on Tuesday 20th November 2018 at the Hill Side Bye Pass Road in Freetown. The four accused appeared before Magistrate Santigie Bangura at the Freetown Magistrate Court No.1 on Siaka Stevens Street in Freetown. Police alleged that on Tuesday 20th November 2018 they found 60 wraps of cannabis sativa in the possession of Brima Kamara, the first accused, charged with unlawful possession of prohibited drug contrary to section 48 of the Pharmacy and Drug Act No.12 of 2001. The 2nd to 9th accused persons were charged with frequenting the place used for smoking cannabis sativa. The nine accused include: Ibrahim Samura, Paller Kamara, Samura Alie, Musa Bangura, Kallay Alusine, Bobson Foday, Abdul Karim Sanu, Hassan Unisa Sesay, and Issa Kamara. Sergeant Newstead prosecuted the matter, and A.B Kamara appeared as defence lawyer. In his submission, the defence lawyer, pleaded for bail. He said, the accused persons are first time offenders. Besides, the accused persons are members of the community safety vigilante group whom the community rely upon for their safety. Magistrate Santigie Bangura fine the first accused Le2.5million or three years imprisonment. The other eight were fined Le1,500,000 or two years imprisonment.
