Sierra Leone News: Gold mining is polluting waters off Kambui Hill

The station manager of Sierra Leone Water Company (SALWACO) in Kenema, John Augustine Forewa Longthrow, has warned people to stop misusing the water catchments located in the Kambui Hills overlooking Kenema. He said they have about nine water catchments in the Kambui Hills that provides water. He said it is surprising news that residents are reporting dirty water from the taps especially at this time of the season when it is not raining. Apparently, the dirty water is affecting the operations of some water sachet companies located beneath the Kambui Hills. He revealed some people are doing gold mining at the Kambui Hill at night. He said they are trying to prevent the illegal activities that are causing such consternation to residents. He said they have spotted the footsteps of miners and their activities in the forest at night. He appealed to the public to provide information to SALWACO and the police that will lead to the arrest of those mining in the Kambui Hill. The Manager said they are to provide safe drinking water and any contaminated water affects the health of the people.
