Sierra Leone News: Absentee lawyers frustrate Judge at Fast Track Court

On Monday 10th December 2018, Justice Miatta Samba had to adjourn over 10 cases due to the absence of legal practitioners at the Fast Track Commercial Court at Government Wharf. The Fast Track Commercial Court is a division of the High Court mandated to hear and determine commercial, mercantile and admiralty matters. The Fast Track was established to reduce the time and cost of commercial dispute resolution, while facilitating the process of contract enforcement over 10 years ago by the Judiciary of Sierra Leone. The frequent absence of lawyers is affecting the work of the court. According to Justice Samba on Wednesday 5th December 2018, “This is the Fast Tract Court and we should be speeding up with matters in this court. Lawyers are not coming to court at all and if they don’t want to come to court, they should not file papers. We are coming to court every day and they are not coming.” She said it is difficult for the court to come up with any decision when both parties are absent, adding lawyers are the ones responsible for filing applications in order for a matter to be struck out of court.
