Sierra Leone News: $400,000 medical support for Rokupa, Lumley Gov’t hospitals

Sierra Leone is struggling to upgrade and maintain an appalling health sector. Studies have shown that lack of basic medical diagnostic peripherals is responsible for incorrect diagnosis and is a contributing factor to early mortality. However, to help boost the fragile health sector, Coca Cola Foundation in partnership with Equatorial Coca Cola Bottling Company and Medshare have donated $400,000 worth of medical supplies and equipment to Rokupa and Lumley Government hospital in Freetown. “The donations form part of the Coca Cola Foundation’s ShareHope programme and demonstrates the strong commitment that Coca Cola has to improve public health in Sierra Leone,” remarked Israel Okujagu, the Managing Director of Sierra Leone Bottling Company (SLBC) Ltd. Dr Nathaniel William of Rokupa Hospital commented that the donation is unique “in the sense that medical professionals from the Sierra Leone Health Service carefully selected the supplies and equipment from Medshares’ database to meet our most urgent needs…” Representative of the Health Ministry, said they are extremely pleased to receive two, 40ft containers of assorted medical supplies and consumables from the SLBC as a way of giving support to the health sector as access to quality health care is a fundamental human right. “Tremendous effort has been made by the government to improve and expand the infrastructure of medical services countrywide, against this backdrop therefore this donation is made at the right time when the Ministry is on the verge of ensuring that quality health care services is provided for all,” he avered. Mayor of the Freetown City Council, Yvonne Aki Sawyerr, explained that in her first two weeks in office the SLBC including six other business made a verbal commitment at a business breakfast on ways they can contribute to help this city, however only two had come through and SLBC is one of them.
