Sierra Leone News: IG to explain to Internal Affairs Committee about former VP’s security issue

The Presiding Speaker of Parliament, Honourable Solomon Segepoh Thomas, has instructed the Clerk to summon the Inspector General of Police to explain the reasons for the withdrawal of security personnel from former Vice President Sam Sumana’s residence. On Tuesday 8th January 2019, a team of Police personnel visited the home of the former VP to withdraw the State security assigned Police detail. Sumana resisted the withdrawal. On Wednesday 9th January 2019, three of the State security personnel were removed from Sumana’s protection leaving only two officers.

Sahr Emerson Lamina raised concerns about the issue which he said involves national security, and which was why he called on the Speaker to engage with the office of the Attorney General and also the IGP for the restoration of the security personnel of the former Vice President. Rising on Standing Order 23, Hon. Sahr Charles (C4C) informed Parliament that he was personally disturbed by the removal of protective security as it threatens the security of the State. He reiterated that Chief Sam Sumana is a former Vice President. Moving his motion for the immediate restoration of the security personnel of the former Vice President, Hon. Charles cited Standing Order 25, calling on the Speaker to instruct the IGP to re-instate the security personnel immediately. This did not go down well with many Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) MPs who insisted the Speaker should not grant the request, as the issue is controversial. The Deputy Speaker, however, instructed the Clerk to summon the IGP Moigbe to go and explain to the Committee of Internal Affairs the reasons for his action. The Deputy requested an immediate report from the Chair of the Committee.
