Sierra Leone News: 11 remanded for possessing pharmaceutical drugs

Magistrate Hannah Bonnie has remanded 11 accused persons on Tuesday 19th February 2019, under allegations of possessing pharmaceutical drugs without requirements under section 17 of the pharmaceutical Act of 2001. In their first appearance, the accused pleaded guilty. The defense lawyer asked the Court to temper justice with mercy as the accused were only engaged selling drugs for their daily survival. Responding to the submission made by the defense, the Magistrate pointed out the seriousness of the offence speculating that because of such acts, many people may have lost their lives as the accused have no knowledge about the administration of the drugs. According to the Police, the 11 accused on Wednesday 13th February 2019 around Freetown were found in possession of a large quantity of assorted pharmaceutical drugs. The Police said the accused could not give any reasonable explanation about the said drugs. The police have also tendered exhibits of the assorted quantity of the drugs. Judgement adjourned to 20th February 2019.
