Sierra Leone News: Foreign Minister bids farewell to Amb. Wu

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alie Kabba on Friday 22nd February 2019, bid farewell to Chinese Ambassador Wu Peng as he prepares to leave this station for another appointment. He said Ambassador Wu Peng has achieved a great deal during his time in Sierra Leone, and he oversaw the strengthening of relations between Sierra Leone and China. “I trust that the deepening of the bilateral cooperation between our two governments is in recognition of the need for strengthening the partnership between our two countries. Ambassador Wu Peng has facilitated China’s signing of different assistance projects with Sierra Leone including the Regent-Limkokwing Road, the West African Medical Research Institute, providing 30 garbage trucks, $29.8 million gratuitous assistance to implement the fish harbour project, visa exemption for Sierra Leonean and Chinese holders of diplomatic and service passports and the repairs to the Stadium complex.” Minister Kabba said they look forward to continued engagement with the Chinese government in this manner, and they are pleased that there is one better friend of Sierra Leone in the person of Ambassador Wu Peng in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China. “Thank you for all the work you have done in your time here, the countless meetings that you have initiated, your efforts in understanding Sierra Leone’s unique situation, and the projects that you have initiated and seen to conclusion. I must say to you that your initiatives have laid the groundwork for long-term gains in our partnership, and you will be remembered through the projects as they yield results over the years. I wish you success as you take up your next assignment.” Ambassador Wu Peng thanked the minister and the entire government for giving him the space to work with them and to initialize so many projects that have finished and others still ongoing. “It was a great honor for me to be posted as Chinese Ambassador to this beautiful, peaceful and hospitable country. My ambassadorship is marked by perfect coordination and cooperation with my Sierra Leone friends. Let me say thank you to you all.” Ambassador Wu Peng said he worked and took part in two state visits to China by President Julius Madda Bio in 2018 and Ernest Bai Koroma in 2016. “Heads of state of our two countries have drawn blueprint for bilateral relations, which my colleague and I worked very hard to implement. The process was not with difficulties, but everything pays off as we see the establishment and advancement of comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between China and Sierra Leone. It pays off as we see Sierra Leone’s steady march towards New Direction and the launching of Free Quality Education Project. It pays off as we see completion and handing over of the Bankasoka Mini-Hydro Power Dam project, the Tropical Infectious Diseases Prevention and Control Centre in 34 Military Hospital, the Reinforcement of National Stadium; it pays off as we witness the signing of Agreement on The Economic and Technical Cooperation, the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation Within the Framework of Belt and Road Initiative, as we look at the smiling faces of cataract patients after Brightness Trip surgeries.” He said he has experienced strong sense of happiness in Sierra Leone each and every day.  He lived by the Lumley beach and every night when he goes to sleep with the sound of ocean waves while sometimes mixed with rock music. “I tried some typical African food, and I will miss the Sierra Leone lobsters. Nonetheless, I was glad to find the introduction of fishing off season, which will effectively protect fishery resources and promote sustainable development of fishery resources. I visited a whole lot of areas all over the country, overwhelmed by breathtaking sceneries, rich endowments as well as excellent culture. Ambassador Wu said he is gladdened by the socio-economic development and achievements Sierra Leoneans achieved, especially with regards to balanced development of different regions. He was by Kenema Secondary School as an Old Boy and alumni. I am leaving, but my love and passion for this country will stay. Please be assured that I will continue to follow closely the development of Sierra Leone and offer committed support whenever needed. People will come and go, but the Sino-Sierra Leone relations will remain strong. Let us pass on the baton and build on past achievements, well implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, jointly push practical cooperation across the board and forge the Sino-Sierra Leone relations ahead toward an even stronger Community with a Shared Future.
