Sierra Leone Sports: Salone to compete in ICC Women’s World Cup qualifiers

Sierra Leone women’s cricket team will compete with nine other nations in the 2019 ICC Women’s World Cup qualifiers hosted by Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) from 3 to 13 May 2019, in Harare. The games will lead to the African regional qualifiers for Women’s World Cups (2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup and 2021 ICC Women’s World Cup). The regional qualifiers in 2019 will determine the pathway towards the global qualifiers for both T20 and 50-overs World Cups. There will not be separate regional qualifiers for 50-overs World Cup. The regional qualifiers will be staged in the T20 format across all five regions (Africa, Asia, Americas, Europe and East Asia-Pacific). Zimbabwe will host Uganda, Kenya, Namibia, Tanzania, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Mozambique and Nigeria in the 9-nation qualifier tournament. The top nation from the qualifiers will advance to the global qualifiers. The tournament schedule will be announced eventually. Uganda Women qualified the last time the qualifiers were held in 2017, edging past Zimbabwe in the process. According to the Director of Women’s Cricket in Sierra Leone, Elizabeth French, the players are looking forward to the competition as they are prepared to make the world know that female cricket is played in Sierra Leone. She revealed that at the end of the female league the best players will be selected to start training ahead of the competition. The head coach, Sarah Johnson, who won the regional female competition as player and coach, said that they are going to the competition with one mind, which is to win and make sure that they put the country on the map.
