Sierra Leone News: MOYA on nationwide youth Council Elections

The Ministry of Youth Affairs (MOYA) will hold nationwide elections of youth council executive starting with Chiefdom Youth Council and later district youth council. Apparently, these groups will be in charge of daily youth activities under the supervision of the Ministry. The Director of Youth, Charles Moinina, said every three years mandates of youth leaders across the country are renewed through an election that is coordinated by the Ministry and conducted by the National Electoral Commission. He said the re-branding of youth takes different forms from involving them in a democratic process that will gives responsibilities to that of making them believes in democracy, tolerance and leadership roles. Monina said each district will be allocated two motorbikes to do monitoring on the free education program, the Hands Off Our Girls campaign and any other security issues. The Ministry of Youth was established in 2013 by Ernest Bai Koroma with the main thrust on youth empowerment and unemployment, which was still challenged with development strides. The Ministry is an overarching hub aiming at addressing all issues on youth in the country in the areas of implementation of youth National Policy, youth training and Development, promotion of youth employment, among other areas. The revised National Youth Policy of 2014 mandated the ministry to be established and take full responsibility of youth councils at national, district and chiefdom levels. The ministry had established a national youth council with 14 district youth councils and 149 chiefdom youth councils.
