Sierra Leone News: SLENA news agency to be revived

The Sierra Leone News Agency (SLENA) is the government news outlet that is supposed to develop and distribute government information and news. But, for many years, SLENA has laid dormant. SLENA has not been publishing, broadcasting or distributing government information. The Ministry of Information wants to revive SLENA and start distributing government information again. On Friday 10 May 2019, the Ministry announced their plans with the financial support of the phone company, Orange. The Minister of Information, Mohamed R. Swaray, said in the midst of a plethora of newspapers, it is important for the government to have an authoritative voice when it comes to news dissemination. Many were of the view that there is already the State broadcaster, the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), and many newspapers cover government activities. Many believe the rehabilitation initiative as a waste of resources. The Minister said Sierra News newspaper is currently publishing out of the Information Ministry at the Youyi building. “It is in this context that we approached Orange with whom we have a working relationship so that SLENA could start on a proper footing,” the Minister said. He went on to say the chain of distribution has already started. The Chief Executive Officer of Orange Sierra Leone Limited, Aminata Kane Ndiaye, said it is good to sponsor this kind of initiative to improve communication and awareness in the country.
