Sierra Leone News: 2 On trial for murdering 9-month old baby

Investigations into the murder of a 9-month old baby continued on Tuesday 14 May 2019, at the Pademba Road Magistrate Court in Freetown. It is alleged that the accused, Robert Lansana and Alpha Kallon, on 7 March 2019, at Metchem Goderich in Freetown murdered the 9-month old. According to the police witness, Inspector Kai Brewah, the mother of the deceased used to leave the baby in the care of the first accused, Lansana. At about 6:30 p.m. on the 6th March 2019, the first accused took the baby into his room while the mother was bathing. At around 9:00 p.m. the mother retrieved the baby from Lansana. The baby became restless. According to the police investigator, the mother said she took the baby to the Arab Clinic in Funkia. A dispenser allegedly gave her some syrup. As soon as she administered the drugs, the 9-month old became ill. The mother told the police that she took the child to the Emergency Hospital at Goderich where the baby later died. The police witness told the Court that he visited the Arab Clinic. The Clinic denied providing treatment for the baby. The witness said at the Emergency Hospital, he was informed that there was suspicion that the deceased was sexually abused. The witness said he took the baby to the Connaught Hospital mortuary for an autopsy examination. The autopsy revealed that the baby had a ruptured hymen and that she sustained a fracture of the right thigh. A genital test was conducted on the accused but the report revealed no connection between the accused and the deceased baby. Lansana and Kallon are facing two counts of Conspiracy and Murder. The accused were not granted bail and the matter was adjourned to 16 May 2019.
